Greetings from the North Shore! Thank you to everyone who came out last night for the NSYR August Social at the Horseshoe Grille in North Reading. We were honored by the presence of several leading GOP candidates for office, including gubinatorial candidate Charlie Baker; candidate for the 5th Congressional District of Massachusetts, Sam Meas; candidate for the 6th Congressional District of Massachusetts, Bill Hudak; and NSYR's very own Brett Schetzsle, candidate for Beverly State Representative. Also joining us was current House Minority Leader Brad Jones. It was a very eventful evening, indeed!

Just a reminder to those of you who haven't yet come out for one of our monthly socials: these are free and open to the public. We encourage you to step out and meet with your local party members in this casual setting. It's a great opportunity to learn more about the issues and how our candidates are gearing up for a great run in the next election cycle.

The Michael Graham Event Was a Great Success!

On April 23rd at Finz in Salem, the North Shore Young Republicans hosted 96.9 FM talk premier host, Michael Graham, for a social cocktail where Michael shared his thoughts on the state of affairs on Beacon Hill and in Washington.

The event was attended by 80 people from all ages eager to here Michael share his humorous take on local and national politics.

Massachusetts, which has become synonymous with one party democratic rule, truly needs an infusion of opposition to politics as usual. Michael and the group that attended are eager to make that happen.

From now until Election Day in 2010, the Young Republicans will be hosting free or low cost social events to gin up the base for a robust opposition to politics as usual in Mass. All over the North Shore, young activists will be introduced to their local town committee leaders in an effort to energize opposition and knock out long time Democratic incumbents. Join us for future events and you too can be part of the resistance.

Members of NSYR attended the Lincoln-Reagan Day/Republican Unity Breakfast hosted by the Malden Republican City Committee earlier this week. GOP leaders from across the region assembled for the event which featured an incredible lineup of speakers, including possible candidate for Governor, Charlie Baker, and “the Lone Republican” from the Boston Herald, Holly Robichaud.

As Keynote Speaker, Holly gave a defiant and witty speech addressing the many ways that Democrats have failed the Commonwealth and urging Republicans to run for office. Her message was consistent with the other speakers who also called on local Republican leaders to step up to the plate for 2010 and 2012 offices.

And, in the spirit of President’s Day, we were even surprised with a special guest appearance by Abraham Lincoln, top hat and all, who recited his Gettysburg Address.

Help Protest Mary Grant's Proposed Gas Tax Increase on Feb 19th at City Hall

Rep. Mary Grant has been identified as a co-sponsor of a bill that will raise the Massachusetts gasoline tax by 29 cents, more than doubling the current tax and giving Massachusetts the highest gas taxes in the nation. This tax increase would cost taxpayers in the Commonwealth nearly $1 billion every year.

This is a tax increase that will immediately impact households across the Commonwealth and would cost a family that purchases two 15 gallon tanks of gas per week over $450 a year. It would also be an enormous increase for small businesses such as landscaping companies, contractors, plumbers and electricians who rely on fleets of vehicles to run their businesses and drive the economy.

Grant's plan would eliminate existing tolls (though it would allow new ones to be built at the borders), but would not do anything to reform or consolidate the many transportation agencies in the state. There has been no explanation of how the 29 cent increase was determined.

This plan is very different than the bipartisan transportation reform bill which has been filed by the State Senate and endorsed by Senate GOP members. That bill is emphasizing 'reform before revenue.'

In the midst of the worst economic downturn in a lifetime, the last thing the Commonwealth needs is a $1 billion tax increase, most of which will be used to pay for the past mistakes of the MBTA and the Big Dig.

The NSYRs spent an enjoyable evening at the Wild Horse Cafe in Beverly earlier this week for our February Social, an informal gathering that drew approximately 20 Young Republicans (and even some older Republicans!) to fellowship, drink beers and brainstorm ways to strengthen our presence within Massachusetts politics.

As a new YR organization, we have been so pleased with the outpouring of support from Republicans across the region. It has been wonderful to get to know new people and to welcome familiar faces at these gatherings!

Calling All Republican Women!

Celeste A. Wilson, the newly elected President of The Mass. Federation of Republican Women, is interested in forming a new chapter in our area. A minimum of ten members are required to charter a new club.

Either Ms. Wilson or another officer of the MFRW will be present at the Malden Republican City Committee meeting to conduct the organization.

The meeting will be held Wednesday February 4, 2009 at 7:30 PM at Anthony's of Malden, 105 Canal Street.

The Bluest State: How Democrats Created the Massachusetts Blueprint for American Political Disaster is a cleverly titled book from John Keller that lays out the ways in which the Blue Party has damaged the Massachusetts political culture. Mr. Keller is a political analyst at Boston's WBZ-TV and comes from a surprisingly liberal background, which is what makes his observations all the more unsettling.

The book examines "Kennedy Country" with an objective eye and identifies discouraging examples of how Massachusetts has set the stage for national Democratic procedure. It has been touted as a must-read for any Republican vying for political office.

Change We Can Believe In

I heard a great comment on 96.9 WTKK today during the Jay Severin block. All along the campaign trail, President Obama promised change, and in looking at the weepy-eyed hordes of people gathered on the National Mall yesterday, there’s no question that he represents that for millions of people.

But when we really get down to it, what change has he actually promised us? I tend to agree with the WTKK quote that “we have projected onto this man the change that each of us wants,” and that is not necessarily the same change as that which Obama references or plans to carry out in his term as the 44th President of these United States.

Rather, it’s this unspoken, unclear, ubiquitous ideology, perpetuated by hyperbolic campaign rhetoric and passed down through the community like a game of telephone, each person reinterpreting and redefining what change means to them.

I hope that when the confetti settles, President Obama represents the change that will lift this country out of a deep recession, secure peace and democracy in warring nations, and restore faith in government and confidence in our leadership.

That is what change means to me.

Political Partying

Thank you to everyone who came out last night in support of the newly chartered North Shore Young Republicans to celebrate the inauguration the 'right' way! We had a terrific turnout, including Rep. Brad Hill (R-Ipswich) and Sen. Scott Brown (R-Wrentham), and successfully raised money to kick-start our efforts in revitalizing the local Republican party. The enthusiasm for change was abundant, although it was probably not the same change being celebrated in Washington and across the nation.

After spending the day travelling all across the state to speak to various groups, Senator Brown took time to speak directly to the gathered crowd at Pellana Restaurant. He was careful to point out how a damaged state goverment, namely Gov. Deval Patrick and other Beacon Hill Democrats have done little to change the bleeding economy, corrupt politics, neputism, and inaction on the part of our elected leaders. His call for change was echoed by everyone in attendance.

For the most part, conversations steered away from President Obama and the hype he generates, and centered more on ways that Republicans, young and old, can contribute to growing new and viable Republican candidates for office, need to restore a two-party government to the state, and battle legislation that negatively affects all residents (such as increased taxes and toll hikes).

1/05 Committee Planning Meeting

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Monday's NSYR committee planning meeting. While we enjoyed great food and great wine (staples of any good meeting!), we were also extremely productive. Everyone contributed some fantastic ideas, including event proposals, charity projects and many other unique ways to both socialize with other like-minded YRs and to begin rebuilding the Republican Party.

If you are interested in being more involved in planning NSYR activities, we are looking for enthusiastic and motivated people for our Events, Communications and Finance committees. As always, our monthly planning meetings are open to the public, and we welcome your ideas!

The North Shore Young Republicans are pleased to announce that Senator Scott Brown will be joining us as a special guest at Tuesday night's 2009 Kickoff: Inauguration Day event at Pellana Restaurant in Peabody.

Increasing the transparency of our government and the accountability of our elected officials, State Senator Scott Brown represents the Norfolk, Bristol, and Middlesex District in the Massachusetts State Senate. Senator Brown was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate in March of 2004. This is his third term in the Senate. Previously, Senator Brown served three terms in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Prior to his election to the House in 1998, Brown served as a Wrentham Selectman for three years.

Senator Brown is a graduate of Wakefield High School, Tufts University, and Boston College Law School. He is a practicing attorney, and a 28-year member of the Massachusetts National Guard, where he currently holds the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. Senator Brown serves on the following Legislative Commitees: Consumer Protection & Professional Licensure; Education; Election Laws; Higher Education; Public Safety and Homeland Security; and Veterans & Federal Affairs.

MFYR State GOP Chair Candidate's Forum

Last night, two candidates for Massachusetts State GOP Chairman, Jennifer Nassour and Mike Franco, met with approximately 60 Young Republicans from the MFYR at The Point in Boston to discuss their campaigns, outline their plans of action and to answer questions.

Richard Wheeler, Chair of MFYR, moderated the forum. He began with a brief overview of the YR organizations and missions, followed by a few announcements on upcoming events, such as the “Stop the Pike Hike” protest at the State House on January 15th at 6:45p and the Join the Resistance: 2009 Kicko ff event for the North Shore YRs on January 20th at 7:00p.

Mike Franco was first to take the podium. He focused on his experience in administration and public relations with an MBA from the University of Texas and 23 years of service in the Air Force. For a complete biography, click here.

Mike addressed the challenges that face the Republican Party and pledged to capture the energy of Massachusetts YRs to strengthen the Party. He demanded that government set a higher standard, and he claimed that the MA Republican Party has the ability to restore the nation and restore true Americanism. Mike expressed the need to advocate for strong local communities, to work on the committee structure, and to foster campaigns in support of solid Republican State Representatives. He closed with a call for the Republican Party to “stop the bleeding.”

Following Mike Franco’s speech was candidate Jennifer Nassour, who like Mike, emphasized her experience leading up to this election. Jennifer is a New York native with a background in political science. She brings direct, relevant experience from a state that actually has a true Republican identity.

Following graduation from a state college, she began working for a New York state senator and hit the streets with petitions for local candidates. She followed up this position with a job in public relations and then moved on to law school. After to moving to Massachusetts 8 years ago, Jennifer delved into addressing the challenges facing the MA Republican Party. She has worked for the Governor’s Office, served as Committeewoman for Charlestown and General Council for the MFYR. For a complete biography, visit Jenn’s web site.

Jennifer plans to build from the grassroots, working with everyone from selectmen and local officials to the governor to rebound the MA Republican Party. She is focused on energizing people and getting them interested in local government. She pledged to fight corrupt legislators and to emulate successful models from different states and different Party chairs.

Both candidates then answered a variety of questions from the attentive crowd. While only the State Committee has the ability to elect either individual on January 27th, Mike Franco and Jennifer Nassour’s pledges to rebuild the MA Republican Party and restore a two-party government to the state echo many of the same sentiments by other candidates for office and Young Republicans everywhere.

Bush Calls for New Republican Leaders

In one of his last interviews as president, Bush urged the Republican Party to be compassionate and open-minded as it moved forward. When asked about how the GOP could win back seats and "avoid future elections like 2008," he claimed it wasn't the philopshy that needed to be changed. Instead, he added, "We definitely need to change messengers. We need a new group of leaders."

Who's Laughing Now?

Isn’t it interesting that Chicago, a national laughingstock as a result of the Blagojevich scandal, is the very city where President-Elect Obama got his political start? Chicago has long had the rap of a city of political thugs. If this is the environment that molds and shapes the minds of legislators in The Machine, we have to wonder whom and what has influenced Obama in his career to-date.

Before the Illinois House voted to impeach Blagojevich earlier today, lawmakers denounced the governor. One particularly scathing remark from Rep. Jack Franks (D-Woodstock) claimed, "The plague that has been brought upon us by Rod Blagojevich will be lifted. We will no longer tolerate the culture of corruption that has seized our government. Our duty is to clean up the mess and stop the freak show that has become our government."

Too late. Ladies and Gentleman, I am sorry to inform you that the freak show has moved to Washington. Is it pessimistic to believe that it’s only a matter of time before corruption plagues the entire nation because of another Chicagoan?
